Good vocabulary is essential if a child is to understand the language going on around them, understand new ideas and express their own thoughts.
You can think of a child’s vocabulary as their mental dictionary. It’s the collection of words they know and use.
Children also need to know that words can be used in lots of ways. Some words are about doing (walking, tidying, swimming), some are about describing (big, small, red). Some words are names for things or people (table, mum, school), others give names to ideas or concepts (size, weight).
Having fun with words helps children to remember them and organise them properly in their heads, so they can find and use them whenever they are needed.
On this site there are some great activities that support vocabulary - find activities here.
